New Romantics By Taylor Swift Interpretation

I'm not only blogging about this because it is nerdy. Aside from that, it portrays humanity. Today, I would like to share with you my interpretation of the song New Romantics by Taylor Swift through genius.com.

Verse 1

We're all bored, we're all so tired of everything
We wait for trains that just aren't coming
We show off our different scarlet letters
Trust me, mine is better

We're so young, but we're on the road to ruin
We play dumb but we know exactly what we're doing
We cry tears of mascara in the bathroom
Honey, life is just a classroom

On the first line, Taylor Swift both mocks and recognizes the young adult's sense of being bored of almost everything because of how much they expect in life (hello, fellow Millennials!). On the next one, she recognizes the existence of failures and disappointment. For her, it is part of being the "New Romantics." Then, regarding the scarlet letters, she talks about the characteristic of young  adults competing on whose scarlet letter is better.

Regarding the "We're so young, but we're on the road to ruin," it refers to how the other generation seem to expect this generation (the Millennials) to fail because of their traits like high expectations, self-confidence, and the like (you can read all about them on Wikipedia (Millennials)).

About the "We play dumb but we know exactly what we're doing," it refers to how girls think that they have to play dumb in order to be in a relationship which is an underlying tactic that is actually smart.

On the "We cry tears of mascara in the bathroom," Taylor Swift recognizes the truth that women sometimes cry for their boyfriends or partners.

Lastly, on "Honey, life is just a classroom," it is pretty straightforward: life is actually just a classroom where we learn stuff, we get bullied, smart people are revered, as well as rich and good-looking people, and the like.

Chorus

Cause baby I could build a castle
Out of all the bricks they threw at me

And every day is like a battle
But every night with us is like a dream

Baby we're the new romantics
Come on, come along with me
Heartbreak is the national anthem
We sing it proudly
We're too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet
Baby we're the new romantics

The best people in life are free

On "Cause baby I could build a castle, out of all the bricks they threw at me," Taylor Swift shows off her ability to make something better and royal out of mean things like "bricks." Also, the word "bricks" rhymes with "castle," which is cool!

On the next line, she recognizes the hardship of life. Despite that, people like her (who are famous and successful) are envied by their peers, so it's all worth it.

On the, "Baby, we're the New Romantics" line, it is explained that Romanticism is an old idea you can learn from school. Young adults experience this romanticism but they always think that it is not that old romanticism taught in school. They think they are the "new" romantics.

On the "Come on, come along with me. Heartbreak is the national anthem. We sing it proudly. We're too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet. Baby we're the new romantics," it is clear that Millennials seem to not have the ability to make relationships lasts. It maybe because they are busy chasing fun ("We're too busy to get knocked off our feet").

On the last line, it is a play on the saying that "the best things in life are free." That saying is about money. Here, Taylor Swift thinks that the perspective of Millennials that they are the best generation ever is true.

Also, she recognizes that the best people in your life like friends and family doesn't have a price.

Verse 2

We're all here, the lights and noise are blinding
We hang back it's all in the timing
It's poker, you can't see it in my face
But I'm about to play my Ace

We need love but all we want is danger
We team up then switch sides like a record changer
The rumors are terrible and cruel
But honey most of them are true

The first line sets the atmosphere of partying where people get drunk and feel alive at the same time. The "We hang back it's in the timing" line expresses that there is a sweet spot in life: it is all in the timing. You have to get hold of this moment to be successful.

About the "It's poker, you can't see it in my face," Taylor sings that love is like poker! Stuff that happen in love is not always obvious all the time.

This line, "We need love but all we want is danger," it is expressed that sometimes, we seek danger in our life.

While on, "We team up then switch sides like a record changer," Taylor says that in life nothing is stable.

Lastly, on "The rumors are terrible and cruel but honey most of them are true," instead of being ashamed of all the "terrible rumors," Taylor Swift learned to accept them.

Breakdown

Please take my hand and
Please take me dancing and
Please leave me stranded
It's so romantic, it's so romantic

This whole "breakdown," shows that most people don't really know how to fall in love. Few people actually understand the science of love (wizard of love where are you?)
